The shop that only does exhausts
Zé Chapas is a small garage in the historic centre of Oeiras: an inspection pit with wooden planks across it, racks of pipes and silencers, old number plates on the walls. Sr. José — Zé Chapas to everyone — does the work. His wife looks after whoever walks in.
It has done one thing for more than three decades: exhausts and catalytic converters, on every make, cars and vans. A customer put it best: “a rare shop these days — they only do that, and they do it very well.”
Nothing gets swapped that can be repaired. If a pipe can be welded, it is welded. Friends drop by for a chat while the job gets done, and some customers have been coming back for twenty and forty years.
